Stacy Mitchell – is a senior researcher
with the New Rules Project,
a program of the Institute
for Local Self-Reliance,
which has as its mission "designing rules as if
community matters." She is the author of The
Hometown Advantage: How to Defend Your Main Street
Against Chain Stores and Why It Matters and Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America's Independent Businesses, as well
as a board member of the American Independent Business
Alliance and leading advocate for independent businesses.
Will Raap – is founder and chairman
of Gardener's
Supply Company in Vermont. Raap
launched the company on the premise that a business
could be successful if it were designed according to
processes found in the natural world. Raap is
also the founder and sustainer of the Intervale
Foundation, a non-profit organization
dedicated to land restoration and agricultural sustainability,
as well as a board member of the Vermont Sustainable
Jobs Fund, Vermont Natural Resources Council, and Vermont
Sustainable Agriculture Council.
Richard Heinberg – is a journalist, educator, editor, lecturer, and musician. His essays have appeared in The Futurist, Intuition, The Sun, Brain/Mind Bulletin, Magical Blend, New Dawn, and elsewhere. His monthly, MuseLetter, was nominated in 1994 by Utne Reader for an Alternative Press Award and has been included in Utne's annual list of Best Alternative Newsletters. He is the author The Party's Over: Energy Resources and the Fate of Industrial Societies and Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World. Heinberg is a core faculty member of New College of California.

Time: Saturday,
October 28, 2005; 10:00 - 5:00. There will be
a lunch break from 12:00 - 1:00.
Cost: $20
per person, $15 per member of the E. F. Schumacher
Society, and $15 for students and seniors. Tickets
are available at the door or from the E. F. Schumacher
Society, 140 Jug End Road, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
Pre-registration is highly recommended to ensure seating. Registration can be made over the phone by calling (413) 528-1737. Credit cards accepted. Payment may be made online at the Schumacher Society's secure donation page. To register online, fill in the number of tickets you would like in the appropriate field under "lecture series," any additional donation you may wish to make, your contact information, and payment details. Alternately, you can print out a lecture registration form and mail it with payment. BerkShares are gladly accepted as payment for registration.
Lunch: A
vegetarian brown bag lunch may be ordered in advance
for an additional $15. Call for menu details. Alternatively
there are several nearby restaurants, or bring your
own bag lunch.
Directions:The
First Congregational Church of Stockbridge is located
on West Main Street (next to Town Hall) in Stockbridge. From
Boston, take the Lee Exit on the Massachusetts Turnpike
and follow signs south (Route 102) to Stockbridge. From
New York City take the Taconic Parkway to Route 23
in Claverack. Follow Route 23 east to Great Barrington,
where Route 23 joins Route 7. Take Route 7 north
to Stockbridge, turn left on Main Street at the Red
Lion Inn. The church will be on your left after
approximate 1/3 mile. The historic red brick
church is easy to identify behind the prominent clock
tower.
